Operation London Bridge (read description)
This video is more than just some meme. It's an expression of the quagmire a lot of people are going through right now. Personally, I had no opinion on the Queen, but I know a lot of people loved her. And while my reaction to her life was indifferent, my reaction to her death is... strange. She's on all my country's coins. She's the only face on my colorful plastic bills that I actually recognize. The British national anthem is named after her.
She was a part of this world for almost a century. Generations of children grew up knowing her face. We all had this running joke in some form or another that she wouldn't ever die.
My own version of the joke is that she was a lich and Koh-i-Noor diamond in the crown was her phylactery. To see her gone is to see the Pyramids of Giza or the Great Wall of China suddenly blink out of existence. For a lot of people, she was not a mortal, but an avatar of the UK.
Now she's gone. What will happen to the British national anthem? What will happen to the Canadian currency? Love her, hate her, be indifferent, it doesn't matter. An era has ended.
