I played this game in 1987, and I thought I was going to get a arcade quality game, but I was wrong. The graphics wasn't as good as the arcade version, but you couldn't expect arcade quality graphics in a 8 bit system. At the time, the arcade games used the Motorola 68000 processor which was a 16 bit microprocessor. In the 1980s, the Arcade version was almost always superior to the home console versions. If you played Operation Wolf on the Turbo-Grafx 16 or PC-Engine, the graphics were almost arcade like. That was because the PC-Engine was a 16 bit console system.

The NES version of Operation Wolf could be played with the zapper, but it was limited. You could only shoot in semi-automatic mode, meaning you had to press the trigger to shot every single time. It wasn't fully automatic, and you couldn't use the grenade launcher. Most people played this game with the NES controller, but it wasn't as ideal for playing a game like this with a controller. The game wasn't terribly difficult, it wasn't easy, so the difficulty was about medium. The game mechanics were good, the controls were good, and it was responsive. The graphics wasn't that great, it was what you would expect from a 8 bit system. The sound was alright, it was much better than the Sega Master System version. Heck, it was better than the Amiga 500 version as well. One thing the Nintendo 8 bit system had that was a cut above the rest was its sound quality. The game was okay overall, but I still played the arcade version. I still went to the arcade every Saturday and spent about $5 there. I liked the arcade version, because it had better graphics and the gun that had simulated recoil.

Operation Wolf the arcade game was a great game. It came out in 1986, and it became a hit arcade game. Operation Wolf was ported onto many different systems, but the games varied from system to system. None of them were as good as the arcade version or came close. In 1998, I got my hands on a RAINE arcade emulator, and I was able to play the arcade version of this game. I was able to play a arcade game on my Pentium 166 mhzs MMX computer, and that was the best version of this game.

When 32 bit/64 bit console systems were released in the mid 1990s, you had carbon copies of arcade games. The technology got so good that arcades started to fade away by the late 1990s. Console systems, like the Playstation, Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar(64 bit) and N64(64 bit system) were very arcade like in terms of graphics. The only reason people went to arcades was to play against other people. When broad band internet was released by the early 2000s, arcades started to fade away altogether. Before 1993, Arcade games had superior graphics compared to console versions of the same game.

Gallery shooters like Operation Wolf were popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The layout resembles a 3d plane, you have depth and width in the layout. It sort of emulates a 3d environment, the targets that are further away appear smaller, and the bigger targets are larger. Many games of this type were made from Operation Wolf to Time Crisis. Operation Wolf was the game that started it all, because all gallery shooters follow the same format. Either you move sideways, or forward. Operation Thunderbolt was the sequel to Operation Wolf and you did move forward in vehicle scenes as well.
