The emulation of Operation Wolf arcade has an interesting history with notable developments occurring even quite recently. The arcade version has had emulated versions available for 20+ years, but it was only fully emulated in as recently as 2018 when the notorious Taito copy-protection C-Chip was finally dumped. Up to that point all emulated versions of Operation Wolf had to be modified or bootlegged in some way to behave like this C-Chip, but this had noticeable side-effects on how the game played when compared to the original arcade board. Features missing such as an end of level boss on stage 2, a random "bonus" stage, and overall pacing and difficulty level. Even the commercially released Taito Legends compilation for PS2/Xbox/PC uses a bootleg version of the arcade ROM.

But thanks to the dedicated work of emulation community members Haze, CAPS0ff, Guru and Bryan Mcphail, Operation Wolf arcade can finally be enjoyed at home in its original form, some 30+ years after its original release. All it's missing now is the feel of that awesome Uzi-mounted cabinet!
