In this video, I demonstrate how to create dreadlocks with jewelry using Ornatrix Maya. I start by creating a simple Furball asset to use as a proxy for the jewelry. I then comb out a guide and apply the MeshFromStrands modifier, selecting the proxy asset and enabling Proxy Reference Up Invert in the Proxy Meshes settings. I increase the Width value in ChangeWidth to make the dreadlock thicker and adjust the axis as needed.

Next, I add more guides using the Create brush and bake the Edit Guides to Baked Guides. I assign the new EG to the guides and turn off MFS temporarily to comb them out. I edit the tip of the dreadlock to make it more realistic and duplicate the proxy, removing the jewelry. I duplicate the Ornatrix object with the same settings and delete the extra objects. Finally, I collapse the history to get the mesh from Ornatrix and adjust the shape of the dreadlocks as needed.

TIMING:

0:00 - Showing an example of an asset that can be used as a proxy. I didn't try to make it perfect. I made it quickly since time is limited and I'm eager to show you. I think you can create a better asset for your tasks and choose the optimal grid to avoid distortions.
0:24 - Creating a standard Furball on the scalp.
0:27 - Removing HairFromGuides, as it's not needed in this case.
0:31 - Select any of the guides and delete the rest.
0:38 - Comb the guide as you wish. You don’t have to remove it; you can quickly sketch out the dreadlocks you need. These guides will be turned into dreads.
0:43 - But before combing, add a Detail modifier, for example with 70 points. This is necessary for a smooth shape of the details and the dreadlock.
0:52 - Perform a Collapse so that Ornatrix remembers this amount. It’s optional if you plan to optimize in the future.
1:08 - Select Full for the curve in ChangeWidth. This is done to ensure the dreadlock has a uniform thickness from root to tip.
1:13 - Apply MeshFromStrands and select Proxy mode.
1:20 - So, my proxy object is called detail_11, precisely what needs to be added to the MeshFromStrands objects to turn our guides into this mesh.
1:28 - To add our object to the Proxy, press the Add Item button and then type the name (these steps will be simplified soon, but for now that's how it is).
1:37 - So, the object is added. But it has the wrong shape. In the Proxy Meshes settings, you need to activate the Proxy Reference Up Invert option and change the axis. Each time - this might be a different axis and activating this option is not always necessary. It depends on the situation.
1:51 - Now, increase the Width value in ChangeWidth so that our object is not so thin.
1:56 - Excellent, our dread is ready and it has decorations.
2:06 - I will comb it slightly in another direction.
2:38 - Here you do not need to enable Conform To Surface, as it will distort the decorations.
2:43 - Now you can add more guides and they will automatically be converted into this dreadlock with decorations. You can use different proxies with different decorations. I think this is understandable. But to save time - I show one type of proxy, without variety and proceed to add - more additional guides using the Create brush.
2:47 - For this brush to take on a new shape, you need to bake Edit Guides into Baked Guides and assign a new EG on top of it. Then Ornatrix will see the new shape and clone it.
3:09 - Since one Proxy has a dense grid, I temporarily turn off MFS and comb the guides.
3:45 - Now you need to edit the tip to make it look more like a dread.
4:16 - Next, we duplicate our proxy and remove the decorations. As we will create another MFS to turn it into real dreadlocks.
4:44 - To not create a new MFS again, I simply duplicate the Ornatrix object with the same settings.
5:16 - Here we see that both the proxy and all objects that were in the MFS have duplicated. You need to remove the excess.
7:17 - After which simply delete the history to get a mesh from Ornatrix.
8:47 - We get dreads from the object, which is without decorations.
10:45 - Then I show how to adjust the shape so that the hair doesn’t get into the decorations.
12:48 - There is another method with a curve in Frizz, but personally, I find it inconvenient. But showed it to you.
13:30 - Ending, subscribe to Artstation, Youtube and other tutorials.
