Paper Mario's Fandom Explained With a Broken Family Analogy - Thane Gaming
Paper Mario fans have been seriously divided for a long time now. While Super Paper Mario made waves by switching up the formula, it can be deduced that Sticker Star marked the complete separation from the games that came before it- a new direction for the series, which now has a trilogy of its own with Color Splash and The Origami King.
It's generally agreed upon that (while different mechanically) Super Paper Mario is very much a successor to the original & The Thousand Year Door in spirit, theme, and story. Starting with Sticker Star though, the more recent three focused far less on plot/unique characters/battles in favor of paper-related gimmicks. Because of this, I suggest we unofficially split the fandom into two separate branches: the first set of games can be called the "Mario Storybook" trilogy, and the second set the "Mario Pop-Up Book" or the "Literal Paper Mario" trilogy.
I use an... odd analogy to explain what exactly this all feels like as a fan, in hopes that we can all unite again through different communities.
