PAX: Guncraft - Interview
It may not take a genius to figure out the inspiration for Guncraft just looking at the name of the game, but lead designer John Getty gives a bit more to go on as he talks about his favourite mode and more.
"You have your creative aspects from Minecraft and you have your shooter aspects from games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Halo and Quake. So we take both of those and we combine into a totally unique experience."
One of the more interesting modes found in Guncraft is lava survival, where players don't only shoot eachother, but also need to be mindful of the ever rising lava level across the level. Now, if you're shot you don't die, but you're knocked unconscious for ten seconds during which your opponent can dig out the ground underneath you - so the game becomes a constant struggle to stay on top.
"There is that satisfying feeling about making somebody die... you know, like permanently. And you get that with lava survival. But even if you do die you're not completely out of the game, you become a wisp and as a wisp you get to fly around the level freely and delete blocks once every ten seconds. So that person that you griefed into the lava they can take their anger out back on you by just hovering around you and deleting the blocks that are underneath you."
While the main game was successfully funded on Kickstarter (if you pre-order the game you can join the beta right now), there is also a current Kickstarter running for a Guncraft deck of cards and card inspired DLC. It's really a rather neat thing.
