Either hardware or software renderer will work fine, but contrary to @3, you'll need Weave tff to eliminate frame-shaking. Out of 3 SRW games I have tested on PCSX2, Z seems to have the best engine (better code optimization, I think), therefore it could run a lot more smoothly:
- Maps: ~40fps (OGS & @3 are around 20-33)
- Intermissions: 52-60fps (fps limiter enabled)
- Battle animation: 30-60fps (depends on how much effect Banpresto throws in the attack)
