A pigeon takes a bath and then dries in the sun. Full process.
Pigeons must keep their feathers clean because they only renew them twice a year. They especially like water. This one can stay in the bath for 10 minutes, it takes 1 hour then to get clean, but the pigeon can fly immediatly, the bird is just heavier for a moment. That's why they go in the water all at once to secure the area, this one won't stay in the water if I don't stay near it, the sound of water is also important, they check water with their beak before anything. I don't use the pommel because I must keep a certain level of water, it's also less dangerous and less noisy. I suggest to let the bird goes in the water itself, but they don't like splashing in it. It's easier with earthenware sinks because they don't make noises. But the bird must has to option to flee or it won't do anything. Birds tend to take a bath during warm days or when they leave the nest, but most often when they think they aren't clean enough. A wet pigeon smells like chalk powder and rock, this is due to the protective layer they put on their feathers. You can see it in the video on the surface of the water, like talc or soft flour, they must renew this layer after the bath. Baths are important to keep the feathers healthy, and also to help the new feathers to develop.
