Boredom got the best of me, so I decided to find a DVD Remote for the PS2 to play around with.
And what did I decide to do? See if I can play a platforming game with it. It really works worse than I was expecting. This would probably work okay with something like Wheel of Fortune, but the SpongeBob Movie game is not something the DVD Remote works well with. It's even worse when you're holding your phone with the hand you should be holding your remote in.

By the way, yes there's a controller plugged in - you can hear it violently vibrate on something at the 54 second mark. But I promise you that it was not used to navigate through anything in this video - for better or for worse.
