Everything is Illuminated is Jonathan Safran Foer’s debut novel, published in 2002. The story interweaves multiple narratives: Jonathan Safran Foer, a young Jewish American, travels to Ukraine to uncover his grandfather’s past and the history of the destroyed shtetl Trachimbrod. He is guided by Alex, a quirky local, and Alex’s grandfather, along with their dog, Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. The novel alternates between Jonathan’s fictional reconstruction of Trachimbrod’s history, Alex’s present-day quest, and letters Alex writes to Jonathan. Themes of memory, history, trauma, and family intertwine as they uncover the remnants of Trachimbrod and confront the moral complexities of the past. The book blends fiction, autofiction, and historical imagination, and was adapted into a film in 2005.
