The play opens as La Fleche, a servant of the rich Harpagon, waits for his master in Harpagon’s home. Valère enters and explains to the audience that he’s begun working as a steward for Harpagon so he can be closer to Harpagon’s daughter, Elise. The two met when Valère saved Elise from drowning, and from there fell in love with her.
