Alright, let's talk about the teal-colored elephant in the room. I thought it'd be fun to wear this hairpiece for the video to, you know, blend in with the Team Galactic grunts. It sorta worked out! It's a weird hairstyle and I frankly do not recommend ANYONE ever wear this... plus long hair is itchy and goes all over the place lol. I've had relatively short guy hair for my whole life, so I don't know how anyone who has this kind of hair on a regular basis functions... anyway, onto the actual music!

I've said before that I quite like Team Galactic! While their grunts may be pretty clueless, mostly functioning as comic relief, the Commanders are a bit better than that! Cyrus really takes the cake, though, as one of my favorite video game villains (full version of his battle theme coming soon, I felt that that one deserved a video of its own!) The designs of the Commanders look cool, and I like that they're named after planets! I just recently thought of the idea of referencing the names of the Commanders by including motifs from Holst's The Planets... very big music theory nerd joke that I didn't find a way to incorporate into this arrangement, haha. I thought it'd be fun to tackle most of the battle music related to Team Galactic in one fell swoop, similar to how I did the Sinnoh Trainer Battle Medley! I definitely had never heard the encounter theme played much beyond the first 5 or 10 seconds or so of the theme, but after repeated listens, I ended up liking it so much that I extended it by quite a bit in this arrangement, haha. This arrangement then goes into the Grunt and Commander battle themes! The Commander battle theme is just a sped-up version of the Grunt battle theme, so it kind of has a "Mario kart final lap" vibe to it. Of course, the arrangement then concludes with the Victory Theme :)

I used quite a bit of new gear in this video to make it possible! First off, I opened the video with my new Fender Jazz Bass! I've wanted a bass strung with roundwound strings that I can get a good slap sound on, and this Jazz bass certainly delivers. I didn't use slap in this video, but the action is set so low on this bass that with just a really hard normal plucking technique, you can get a sound that almost sounds like slap! A friend of mine suggested I check out the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so I took some inspiration from Flea's bass playing for this video! I'm also using a new tone on the EWI, which is a relatively small thing... but it made a big difference! My default tone on the EWI is preset #4 on the Patchman sounds, which is a chorus-y brass kind of tone, but at 2:31 in this video, I tried using a new tone (I think it's #65)! Reminds me a lot of Brecker's EWI tone of choice. I also did some growling with the EWI (yes, you can do that!) I guess it's more of a flutter-tongue in execution, but it ends up sounding growly with the way the EWI interprets that input. Pretty cool! I'm also using my electric organ in this video! I used it once before in my Rainbow Road as a background instrument, but this is my first time using it in any sort of lead capacity. It's no Hammond B3, but it can be useful in certain contexts like this one! It was a generous donation to me from a person who attends the church that I sometimes play organ at! I've had it since Summer 2019, but never really had a good video to use it in as a featured instrument. That changes with this video!
