Story 8/10 :

For what the creator had to work with...This story is actually really interesting! It didn't have quite the presence/atmospheric build up that the Portal series is known for but it made up for that in clever design/cheeky signs. The story is very basic in progression, overlords are commanding test subject to test, test subject succeeds, everybody parties. The one thing I am a bit confused on is the thrown in part about an escaped test subject, it seems like it didn't go anywhere and that is disappointing but it could have just been me missing rooms so who knows?!

Audio 7/10 :

These maps bring back old Portal sounds and soundtracks but they also include some delightful background music that isn't by Valve.

Graphics 8/10 :

We get to see the old pieces/components of Portal that we've grown to know and love BUT there are also brand spanking new models all over the place! I found the custom models to be really well done. Nothing was incredibly out of place/hard to look at. It all seemed to match the theme of the maps and looked very polished in the process. Beyond impressed with the crane model and energy whositwhats!

Controls 8/10 :

There are several new mechanics in these maps! The crane was the first we encountered and I have to admit it was pretty jarring...But it WORKED! It made the player think of puzzles in a different way with this new form of portaling. While it was a bit inconvenient that portals disappeared when the crane was moved, it wasn't the end of the world. The second mechanic we see is the ball form! It's a shame it wasn't used more! Controlling the little ball was beyond fun however, it was a bit of a pain. The sensitivity on it was a bit too high for comfort but was doable. All in all the creative ideas brought out in these maps really impressed me!

TL;DR

Batcature Laboratories promises to bring a new story, new puzzles, and even new models/mechanics to the classic Portal tale. And it truly does! There are polished custom models and mechanics that feel like they should've been part of the actual Portal games. Couple that with fresh new puzzles and you have yourself a Portal game! I found the story to be a bit too linear but that doesn't mean it was bad in any sense! I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing through these maps and would recommend them in a heartbeat.
