As I was visiting Michael in Germany, of course I brought along my Oculus DK2 and tried out multiple demos, full games or games currently in early access. Among them was Time Machine VR.
The Unreal Engine 4 is working quite nice here, creating a visually appealing underwater world with some nice animations for the prehistoric creatures. In some cases there were clipping issues though. We especially liked the cockpit experience. Controlling the vessel with the joysticks of the required Xbox controller feels responsive and is represented visually in the game.
We liked looking at the thrusters on the outside of the tiny submarine, while navigating underwater. But apart from the exploration, there isn’t really that much to it in the end.
In order to get to the gameplay, players have to sit through long monologues and a very slow paced introduction to the game mechanics in every mission. The long loading times are not helping in this regard either, once you arrive at your destination you simply do what the game tells you to do, which is to use one of five different tools on the prehistoric creatures.
The best feature gameplay wise is the time freeze, which you can only use for a limited time until you have to recharge it. That’s definitely fun to play around with. Finishing the game doesn’t take a long time and a good chunk of it you’ll be waiting for the instructions or loading times to finish, instead of just playing the game.
We are not saying the game is super bad, but in its current form we don’t think it’s worth the asking price just yet.
Maybe the game is too casual for its own good, as failing an objective doesn’t set you back more than a couple of seconds. And as a result players are never encouraged to get into the stealth mechanics. Nonetheless, we are eager to see where the project is headed and we still find the idea behind it very appealing. We will definitely keep you up to date.
