The PS5 has the ability to record your gameplay footage with capabilities that far exceed the same feature on PS4. Previously on PS4 you can only record gameplay videos in 720p 30fps with very low bitrate videos of around 6 kbps and a maximum duration of one hour.

By default the PS5 is able to record gameplay footage from 15 seconds to one hour in duration at 1080p 60fps. You can change this setting for video recording with a resolution of up to 4k 60fps and the resulting video still looks amazing.

The question is do you still need a game capture device like Elgato to record the gameplay footage of the PS5?

For the last three or four months I've been using Avermedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus to capture all my gameplay footage videos. Yeah, I know that Portable 2 Plus is capable to pass-through the 4K signal from your PC/console to your 4K screen but it’s missing the HDR and you can only capture your gameplay footage in 1080p 60fps. However the Portable 2 Plus is the best I could afford at this time so I use the best that I have at this moment.

The two videos from the PS5 built-in capture and ALGP2P, when compared side by side, they look almost similar in quality. But if you look closely, you can see that the PS5 video has a more vibrant color, while the video from ALGP2P has better black and white contrast.

If you are just starting a gaming channel and want to keep your budget as low as possible, then the built-in capture feature of the PS5 is enough. On the PS5 you can also do some basic editing on the Create menu. But if you want to edit gameplay video footage more freely then you need an external gaming capture device like Elgato or Avermedia.

As for now I’m gonna stick with my Avermedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus. Its most prominent feature is that you can capture gameplay videos absolutely PC-free. But, capturing gameplay footage using PS5 built-in capture is PC-free too, right?
