QT30E - Prehistoric Dude - A Fun Platformer Held Back By Little Frustrations
The newest video in a new series called QT30E is on Prehistoric Dude. it's developed by lightUP and published by Ratalaika Games. i played the PS4 version of the game.
I don't remember when i bought this game, but it was definitely in a sale. as i had bought it, i must've looked up some scores for it. i just had never played it. so this video is the first 30 minutes with the game.
For the most part it went well. it looks nice, things are mostly clear, and the story is simply told at the start. initially, i thought the controls were good. but as i progressed i learned that the controls have a little quirk. the game seems to have an issue with vines and moving logs. as soon as you touch vines, your character moves left and right much faster than he did before. even by the end of the 30 minutes i don't think i ever got the hang of it. the moving logs also seem to be a pain. but i don't know if that's because of a similar issue or the speed difference between them falling and my character jumping.
It plays in a way i didn't expect, too. instead of it being broken up into stages, or it being an endless runner as we chase after the dinosaur, it's split into rooms. each room feels connected to the ones near it and as a whole it feels like one big world. some rooms have gimmicks like beating enemies, others require you to hit switches. but you won't be able to the latter right away.
the game doesn't tell you that there are powerups. it initially gives you all the controls at the start of the game. the problem there is, about half of them don't work. it was a little frustrating as i could see something that needed to be done but when i tried to use the correct controls, nothing happened. as i played i learned that there are power ups scattered across the world. i'm sure this'll mean some degree of backtracking.
overall it was fun. but there were little frustrations here and there that were annoying and took away from my enjoyment. the game does appear to be dishing out trophies so there's the possibility i'll play it again in my own time or as part of Backlog Conquering. If you see the game in a sale, i'd say it's worth getting. just know that it has it's own little quirks.
