The game is set in the quaint island town of Redfall, Massachusetts. After a "failed" scientific experiment by the bio-company Aevum Laboratories, they transformed themselves into Vampires and subsequently took over the town. To isolate themselves from the outside world and prevent anyone from escaping, the Vampire Gods blocked out the sun and pushed the water back from the island. Trapped inside Redfall, it is up to four suvivors to end the threat for good - cryptozoologist and inventor Devinder Crousley, telekinetic college student Layla Ellison, combat engineer Remi De La Rosa, and supernatural ex-military sniper Jacob Boyer.
The story trailer also shows plenty of spooky (but not necessarily horrifically scary) vibes and plenty of in-game footage.
If Redfall still carry over the traits of Arkane, hopefully, the world and incidental lore is as gripping as they were for the curious explorers in their past games.
Unlike Arkane Austin’s past games, Redfall’s gameplay should remind you more of a typical open-world co-op shooter (complete with skill trees and colour-coded loot) than it is a “pure” immersive sim. While the game can be played solo, you are expected to play this game on a constant internet connection.
Redfall releases on May 2 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass day-1 of launch.
Redfall is divided into two areas, District 1 on the east side of the island and District 2 on the west side. Players undertake a variety of missions in areas known as Neighborhoods. Players take back territory within each neighborhood by capturing Safehouses. Safehouses enable players to replenish supplies, interact with other survivors, and undertake unique missions. After enough territory has be reclaimed, players will be allowed to face the leader of the neighborhood, the Vampire Underboss. Once they are defeated, they will drop skulls which act as keys for players to battle the Vampire Gods who serve as final bosses for each chapter. Aside from the main story, side missions are also available to players like procedurally generated Vampire Nests.
The game lets players choose between four different survivors with two other characters set to be added post-launch. Each character has their own unique abilities and skills which can be upgraded by leveling up and spending skill points. Players can customize the appearance of their character through unlockable skins. Once selected, players are locked to a character for the duration of their save file. Cooperative play can be done with up to three other players.
