The history of cats' life with people is a journey of thousands of years 🐾
Today, cats are some of the most beloved pets on the planet. They rule TikTok, sleep on our pillows, purr next to us on sofas, and sometimes even allow themselves to be petted. But how did this story begin? Why did humans and cats become allies, almost members of the same family? Let's look into the past and find out how cats came to our home - and stayed forever.
🏺 Ancient Egypt - a cat as a deity
The history of domestication of cats goes back deep into time - about 9 thousand years ago. Archaeological finds in Cyprus indicate that even then people and cats lived side by side. But cats received true love and even deification in Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians considered the cat a sacred animal. It protected the house from snakes and rodents, and therefore - from hunger and disease. The goddess Bastet was depicted as a woman with a cat's head. Killing a cat was punishable by death. They were buried with honors, and in some cases, even mummified.
⚖️ The Roman Empire and the Middle Ages — a cat between love and fear
With the fall of Egypt, cats "migrated" to Europe. In Ancient Rome, they were valued as protectors of barns and symbols of home comfort. However, in the Middle Ages, the situation changed. With the advent of dark beliefs and fear of "evil spirits", cats - especially black ones - began to be associated with witches and the devil.
Thousands of animals were destroyed. This had a tragic effect on people: the growth of the rat population without natural predators accelerated the spread of the plague. Only centuries later did humanity realize the mistake - and cats again became desirable companions.
🌍 The East - another love story
In China and Japan, cats have always been considered a blessing. They were kept in monasteries, rice fields, and merchants' houses. The famous "Maneki Neko" appeared in Japanese culture - a smiling cat that waves its paw and brings good luck.
Cats were also respected in the Islamic world. The Prophet Muhammad, as legend has it, loved cats very much. They were considered clean animals, and they were welcome guests in mosques and homes.
🐾 New era - a cat becomes a member of the family
Since the 18th-19th centuries, cats have become popular among European aristocrats. They began to not only keep them at home, but also breed breeds: Persian, Siamese, Maine Coons. Gradually, cats "moved" from kitchens and sheds to soft armchairs and sofas.
A real "cat renaissance" began in the 20th century. Cats become heroes of books, cartoons, advertising. People get them not only for the sake of benefit, but also for love. Exhibitions, clubs, specialized veterinary clinics appear. A domestic cat is officially recognized as a full-fledged member of the family.
📱 Our days — a cat in the digital world
Today, cats are conquering social networks. Millions of videos, memes, likes. "Grumpy Cat", "Nyan Cat", "a cat who screams for dinner" - they are all part of modern culture. But behind all this is the same as thousands of years ago: love, warmth, contact.
Cats help us cope with stress, loneliness, anxiety. They purr when we are sick. They look into our eyes when we are sad. And they just live nearby, not demanding anything except comfort and a little attention.
🧡 What can we give them in return?
The history of cats' life with people is a history of trust. The cat itself chooses who to trust. And if it is next to you, it means you deserve it.
Cats have not changed over the millennia. They are still independent, proud and a little mysterious. But there is so much love in them that sometimes you can’t find in words.
