How To Unlock:
There are 6 House Sequences. Throughout the game you will randomly come across a room with a house.
It’s only found in Biome 1 (Overgrown Ruins) & Biome 4 (Echoing Ruins). It cannot spawn in other Biomes. However, it won’t spawn in each playthrough, it’s just random luck. If the house has its lights turned on, you can enter via the front door. If the lights are off you can’t enter. The first time you want to enter it you must find the house key from one of the nearby side rooms (blue gates on the minimap). Just search all rooms near the house carefully until you get the house key, then backtrack to open the house door. In my case it was in a blue side room a few main rooms after the house, in a big chest made out of stone.
Each time you enter the house you will see a flashback scene. These are basically Returnal’s “story cutscenes”.
Below is a list of the house sequences and how/when to get them.
Act 1 / Biome 1 – First time you see the house you will need the house key to enter. Search all side rooms (blue gates on minimap) near the house. There should be a big stone chest in one of them with the key. In my case it was a few rooms after the house. Once you have the key, backtrack to the house to open the door. In this sequence you roam around the house and it ends with you looking out the window upstairs and seeing an astronaut outside.
Act 1 / Biome 1 – Second time you see the house you should be able to enter it again, no key needed. I hadn’t killed the first boss yet and could already revisit the house. But if the lights are not on for you, just try to advance the story (kill 1st and 2nd boss) and it should become accessible. In this sequence you will roam around the house and it ends with you finding a piece of paper on the upper floor.
Act 1 / Biome 1 – Third time I visited the house was after having unlocked the 3rd biome (after 2nd boss), no key needed. It’s possible that it can be revisited earlier than that, but if the lights are off for you then try again after having reached the 3rd world. In this sequence you watch TV, an astronaut shows up on the TV and then you find the same astronaut standing in the hallway of your house.
Act 2 / Biome 4 – Fourth time you can enter the house is in Act 2 / Biome 4. Whenever you see the house for the first time in this Biome you should be able to enter it. In this sequence the little girl plays with a PS5 controller and then goes to the kitchen to eat cereal and tells the astronaut a story.
Act 2 / Biome 4 – Fifth time you can enter the house is after having unlocked Biome 6 (Abyssal Scar). When you pass by the house the next time the lights should be turned on. It’s a sequence where you play as a little girl, she searches for her octopus plush toy and then she gets trapped inside the television.
Act 3 / Biome 4 – After having seen the first 5 sequences and after having defeated the 5th boss (Ophion), a total of 6 sunface fragments will spawn. There’s 1 per region. You need to get lucky that they spawn on your run. You must collect all of them and bring them back to the house. Just keep replaying all biomes a few times and clear out all rooms carefully. You can see how many you have in the “Status” Screen - Permanent Equipment (bottom right corner of Status Screen) - Items (where it also shows the House Key, Crimson Key, Fractured Key). Once you brought back all 6 sunface fragments the final house sequence will begin.
After this you get the car keys, which you must use on the car after beating the endboss (Ophion) to finish Act 3.
