I've played a lot of rhythm games, and few are as ambitious or well put together as Rhythm Fighter from Coconut Island and Echo Games. Taking everything you love about River City Ransom, Boom Boom Rocket, and Crypt of the Necrodancer, the craft put into this game can't be topped. Couple a deep rhythmic combat mechanic with incredible music and killer visuals, and you've got a can't miss title.

I think the first real game I can qualify as a 'rhythm' game would be Um Jammer Lammy on the PS1. That led to a ton of great experiences with things like Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Runner 2, Elite Beat Agents, Parappa the Rapper, and Cadence of Hyrule. Rhythm Fighter is a top tier, upper echelon game that I think you should definitely check out on Steam. It's $14.99 to pick up, or you can take it for a test drive with the offered demo!
