Mega Man 8, known as Rockman 8: Metal Heroes in Japan, is a video game released by Capcom. It is the eighth installment in original Mega Man series, and was originally released in Japan on the Sony PlayStation on December 17, 1996. The following year, Mega Man 8 saw a release on the Sega Saturn and was localized for both consoles in North America and the PlayStation in PAL regions. Upon its release, Capcom reached the franchise's tenth anniversary. Mega Man 8 is the first game in the series made available on 32-bit consoles.

The plot begins as the robotic hero Mega Man is called to investigate a mysterious energy reading coming from a recent meteor crash on an island. Mega Man discovers that his arch nemesis Dr. Wily has beaten him there and immediately retreats with the energy source. Mega Man is charged with stopping Wily's evil plans to use the energy, as well as discover the purpose of a mysterious, alien robot found at the crashsite.

Like Mega Man 7, the player completes an introductory stage and is presented with four Robot Master stages (Tengu Man, Frost Man, Grenade Man, and Clown Man) to tackle in any order he or she chooses.[6] At the end of each stage is a boss battle with a Robot Master; defeating the Robot Master earns the player its Master Weapon

A noteworthy addition to gameplay in Mega Man 8 is the ability to display and use multiple weapons onscreen simultaneously. This change introduces a unique way of using weapons strategicallyThis is also the first (and only) game in the series in which Mega Man can swim.

Another significant addition is the use of scrolling shooter segments in stages. At certain intervals of some stages, the player pilots Rush in the dog's Jet mode. Busting open large capsules will free Dr. Light's other creations (Auto, Beat, or Eddie), thus granting the player more firepower. In other stages, Mega Man jumps onto a rocketboard, which gradually accelerates as it proceeds across the level

The United States release of the game comes with a collector's special Bonus Enclosed: A full-color history booklet of Megaman including artwork previously unreleased in the U.S.

A gigantic space explosion sends two strange meteors crashing to Earth. The call goes out and Mega Man speeds to the site. There he sees his arch-rival, Dr. Wiley, fleeing the scene, clutching one of the mysterious metallic meteors. Now Mega Man must uncover the secret of the second meteor in a race to stay one step ahead of Dr. Wiley and his new deadly breed of super-powered robots.

Capcom is celebrating Mega Man's 10th anniversary with the release of MegaMan 8: Anniversary Collector's Edition for both the Sony PlayStation and the Sega Saturn. Mega Man, Capcom's best-selling character, is making his first foray into the 32-bit realm with a brand new adventure featuring beautiful Japanese-anime style intros and new, innovative gameplay. As a Special Bonus, every package will include a 12-page collector's booklet containing Mega Man's 1 - 7 game history and featuring artwork previously unavailable in the United States.
