The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland establishing mills, workshops, and barracks. She intends to harvest the forest of its riches. However, under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root is a 1-4 player Asymmetric war game by Leder games, where players battle for control of the woodland. Each faction, the cats, birds, woodland critters, and heroic vagabond, operate with their own mechanics and victory conditions. Throughout a game of Root, you will be doing your best to capture territory, defeat your opponents in direct battle or subvert their plans through tactical strategy, craft rare weapons, equip your faction's abilities, and eventually wrest control of the forest.
The most unique part of Root is that each faction operates within its own core system, the Marquis De Cat play a game of engine building and logistics - doing their best to balance the forest while building production lines of workshops, barracks, and lumber mills. The Eyrie dynasty plays a game of programming - securing the forest one region at a time while following a strict order of operations crafted by the player. The Woodland Alliance operates in the shadows - playing a game of subversion and explosive gameplay. They spread like a secret moving from one clearing to the next. Finally, the humble vagabond seeks to be the hero of the forest creatures. She will aid other players to gather useful equipment, explore dangerous ruins, and complete quests along the way!
Each faction is doing its best to balance the game state and be the first to reach 30 victory points through controlling regions, crafting items, and their own personal scoring objectives.
While Root is a legend in the Asymmetric field it can be hard to teach, is more brutal than it looks, and can often feel unbalanced if you or others don’t understand the systems in play. Balancing the game state is important - but not always possible with new players.
Root might be right for you however if you love the woodland aesthetic, want to explore an asymmetric game that brings something new to the table every time you play or enjoy a tactical war game that invites a bit of chaos.
When it comes down to it Root is a gem and if it's right for you - you will fall in love with it. If you enjoy the Asymmetric systems in Root and want to explore that style of the game further take a look at Vast also by Leder Games. If you enjoy the war game aspect of Root check out my favorite 4x game space empires 4x by GMT for a much heavier experience!
