Sea Battle, widely known as Battleship, is a strategic guessing game for two players. Each player arranges a fleet of ships on a concealed 10x10 grid. Players alternate turns, calling out coordinates to try and hit and sink the opponent's ships. The standard fleet consists of an aircraft carrier (5 squares), a battleship (4 squares), a submarine (3 squares), a cruiser (3 squares), and a destroyer (2 squares).
During the game, each player uses two grids: one for their own ships and one to track their shots at the opponent's grid. The objective is to sink all the opponent's ships by accurately guessing their locations. The opponent indicates whether each shot is a hit or miss, and a ship is considered sunk when all its squares are hit. The game ends when one player sinks the entire fleet of the other.
Battleship originated as a pencil-and-paper game during World War I, evolved into a plastic board game by Milton Bradley in 1967, and has since developed into electronic and digital formats. Variations include Electronic Battleship with sound effects and automated responses, as well as app-based versions.
Players often employ strategies like the checkerboard pattern or hunt-and-target approach to increase their chances of hitting ships. Battleship's blend of simplicity and strategic depth has made it a lasting favorite, leading to its presence in various media, including the 2012 action film "Battleship."
