[ Silent Hill 1 ] - Config & Tech
Base game tweaks to run optimized or improved functions of the game.
*~ Important ~*
Please see Gameplay - Part 10.
As I discovered some more technical stuff.
That I wasn't aware of until I was playing the game.
Covers emulation crashes at cutscenes, with a fix.
As well as talks about widescreen usage.
This information is given at the beginning of Part 10.
*~ Notes ~*
After some more testing, which I should have done before.
Emulating through Duckstation at least, the "in-game" brightness
setting doesn't really seem to matter.
I took two screenshots at 0 & 3 brightness.
Compared them back to back and I didn't see any change.
If you read about Silent Hill 1 online in forums and stuff.
A lot of people say that Silent Hill 1 "brightness" is weird anyway.
I'm not sure of these effects on real Playstation 1 hardware.
They should show a difference between 0 & 3 brightness.
I'm guessing if anything playing through Duckstation.
That the emulator itself is overwriting or
controlling the brightness in general terms.
The setting in Duckstation', "True Color Rendering" that I talked about.
It will definitely affect your brightness, I confirmed this.
If you want the game brighter.
Check the box for that setting.
If you want the game darker "normal".
Leave the box unchecked.
I will be using 0 brightness in the game options.
Also leaving my "True Color Rendering" unchecked.
Would be my recommendation to you as well.
This should be your true baseline.
You and I have different monitors/screens.
Each has different brightness/contrast settings adjustments.
What looks good to me may not look good to you.
Normally for video editing/showing on YouTube.
I would bump the brightness up a little there.
Gonna leave that at normal and see how it goes.
If it's too dark I will adjust the brightness as needed.
When your just chill in Silent Hill on the streets.
It is already pretty bright as it is.
Which I think is intentional by the developers.
The contrast between light and dark.
The streets of Silent Hill above will be bright and visible.
The depths of Silent Hill will be dark and hidden.
You aren't always intended to see things clearly in the town of Silent Hill game.
*~ Normal vs My Config ~*
Here are some examples of Duckstation defaults.
Compared to if you followed along in my Config & Tech video.

Personally, I don't remember OG "Original" Silent Hill 1
on the Playstation 1 looking this pixelated.
However, you can see a stark difference in graphical fidelity.
I guess the OCD in me appreciates that Harry's belt buckle is now centered.
Listen, I don't have issues with pixelated graphics.
I love them too in games as much as I do modern graphics.
For some people, the pixelated graphics can add to the uneasy
feeling Silent Hill already has a going for its atmosphere.
So by all means drop some graphic options
lower to get a nice crisp pixelation look.
Raise them up if the pixel look isn't your thing.
It's just an option that you can choose.
I'm going with the settings for this playthrough using "My Config".
I think it will present better on YouTube videos.
Especially with all the video compression that goes on when uploading.
That is also why I used the option in the
Config & Tech video to reduce texture wobble.
For the same reasons, I mentioned above.
Gives it that Remastered look that all
the youngins are crazy about these days. :)
