Sonic 3D Blast, otherwise known as the last mainline Sonic game released for the, now aged, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Released after the release of the Sega Saturn, Sonic 3D Blast was released across both platforms in North America in 1996. Originally conceived as a gameplay style intended for Sonic Crackers, Sonic 3D Blast was released as a stand-in for the canceled Sonic Xtreme. The gaming world was seeing popular game franchises from the previous 8 and 16 bit eras were transitioning to 3D and Sonic was being quickly left behind. Despite the hype of Sonic Xtreme, meant to be the killer app for the Sega Saturn, the game's horrible development cycle led to its cancellation, leaving the Saturn, which was already floundering in North America at this point, without Sega's flagship franchise having any representation... UNTIL NOW! Except it was also released for the Mega Drive... which is the version you're seeing here. Sonic 3D Blast is commonly lambasted as Sega's rushed attempt to make a 3D game that could be released across both their 16 and 32 bit hardware and the 16 bit version ended up being the one that was best known, leaving the Saturn, still, without a system selling exclusive Sonic game. Sonic 3D Blast is not a real 3D game, utilizing pre-rendered sprites and an isometric camera perspective to fake a 3D look. Compared to Sonic's competitors in Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64, Sonic 3D Blast is a sorry excuse for a 3D game as far as presentation is concerned, but being that it was rushed out the way it was, there was little that could have been done realistically. But its context aside, how does the game play? Not bad, honestly although I really wish there was analog control and the collision detection improved.
