I actually went a step further and didn't even press the boost button, not even for aiming the cannon.

After watching patiently people say how you can't beat the water stages in Sonic Unleashed w/out boosting, challenge accepted

I took advantage of a glitch in the game which has the drifting ability keep whichever speed you had, regardless of if you are on water or not, you only lose speed when changing direction (thus why it's so important to drift into the dash panel at 2:08)

This trick makes it possible to beat Jungle Joyride Act 1 w/out boosting as well, but I'm yet to find a way to beat Dragon Road since it has the ramp at the end of the water segment (it drops your speed to zero regardless of your speed; unless of course you are boosting)
