Okami tells the story of a mythical sun god who sets out to restore a dismal world, decimating the forces of evil who stand in the way by commanding the elements and mythical abilities the deity possesses. Mixing Japanese folklore and a stunning traditional Japanese art style, players must utilize an inventive control scheme to overcome the challenges and evil that await.
The player controls the main character, Amaterasu, in a woodcut, watercolor style, cel-shaded environment, which looks like an animated Japanese ink-illustration (known as ink wash painting, or sumi-e) with other styles of art. The gameplay style is a mix of action, platform, and puzzle gaming genres, and has been noted by many reviewers to have numerous similarities in overall gameplay style to The Legend of Zelda series, an inspiration that director Hideki Kamiya, a self-proclaimed Zelda fan, has admitted has influenced his general game design.] The main story is primarily linear, directed by Amaterasu's guide Issun, though numerous side quests and optional activities allow for players to explore the game world and take the story at their own pace. By completing quests, side quests, and small additional activities (such as making trees bloom into life or feeding wild animals), Amaterasu earns Praise, which can then be spent to increase various statistics of the character, such as the amount of health and number of ink wells for Celestial Brush techniques.
The story begins with a dark force, the eight-headed serpent Orochi, being resurrected, bringing chaos and despair to the land of Nippon. Amaterasu, along with her tiny artist companion Issun, embarks on a quest to restore balance and save the world from Orochi's tyranny.
Amaterasu's divine powers are harnessed through the celestial brush technique, allowing her to manipulate the environment and combat enemies. By painting symbols directly onto the screen, players can create gusts of wind, summon celestial objects, and restore life to the barren landscapes. As Amaterasu explores the vast realm of Nippon, she encounters various gods, spirits, and quirky characters, each with their own unique stories and quests. Along the way, she gains new brush techniques, uncovers hidden abilities, and collects powerful divine artifacts known as celestial brush techniques.
With her unwavering determination, Amaterasu battles formidable adversaries, both human and supernatural, in epic boss fights. Each encounter tests her skills and challenges her resolve to restore peace and harmony to Nippon. As the narrative unfolds, Amaterasu learns more about the origins of Orochi's resurrection and the true nature of her divine mission. The journey takes her to mystical realms, celestial palaces, and hauntingly beautiful landscapes, all rendered in a vibrant and cel-shaded art style reminiscent of traditional Japanese ink paintings.
