SSB4 - Egg Roll Techniques
UPDATE: This video contains some misinformation; go over to my thread on Egg Roll for a more up-to-date text version of this video: https://smashboards.com/threads/everything-about-egg-roll-side-b.437801/
------------------------
Egg roll isn't actually that useful, it just works in situations where it really shouldn't. Still, you can use these techniques to throw off your opponents even more.
Unnamed Technique #1
--------------------------------------
I'll have to look for the names of these, but for now I'll just refer to these as #1, 2, and 3.
Anyway, #1 uses the little hop from the start of Egg Roll. Usually, when you start it on the ground, you start with a hop, but then you have to wait until you reach the ground again. However, starting it from just underneath a platform can allow you to reach the ground faster. As for what the perfect height from below the platform is, it's probably best if you just test it out on your own.
Missing the platform on stages like Smashville will definitely be bad, but this technique can still throw off the opponent. You short hop, and the opponent might think you're going to do a F-air or Neutral B. Then you use Side B, and sometimes you can get random damage because, I mean, it's Egg Roll.
Unnamed Technique (?) #2
---------------------------------------------
This isn't so much as a technique as much as it is a property (though I guess utilizing it could count as a technique?).
Anyway, to do this, press Side B, then let go. You'll continue rolling until you reach the ledge of the platform (or of the stage), and then you'll sort of roll in place, as shown in the video.
Now, you have a few options at this point. Turn around (input the opposite direction that you're facing, in the video's case that's left), cancel Side B (press B and break out of the egg), hurtle forward (pressing forward), and jump (press jump).
Every Side B that you do, you can only jump once. You can try this on your own. In other words, from the point that you start Side B until you break out, you can only jump once. Keep this in mind if you're trying to go for the jump option.
Unnamed technique #3
--------------------------------------
I've seen pro players throw this out randomly, and it looks REALLY weird. I went over to Battlefield to try this out, and this is what I've got.
For this example, start on the left platform of Battlefield, like in the video. Perform Side B and once you start falling towards the stage to the right (using #2 should make this easier to react to), hold LEFT and JUMP at the same time while you're in the air, and it should work properly.
Try it out a bit, and you should be able to figure out which controls are more flexible than others. So far, I haven't found out whether the jump input should be before or at the same time as hitting the floor, but buffering the jump input by holding it the whole time you're in the air should work.
I have tested this out on the Smashville platform and I'm pretty sure I tried the Town & City stage, too. It should work on any platform about the same height as Battlefield, as long as it gives you that bounce off the ground.
I'm guessing that the bounce from hitting the ground from so high up has something to do with this, and going in the opposite direction makes even more weird stuff happen. The jump probably combines with the bounce, and you end flying up into the air. It's weird, I don't know.
100AngryTurtles also made a video on the 3rd technique, which you can see here: https://youtu.be/ODBZXyQbCHk
