The second season of Euphoria has been, in a word, bleak. Truly, misery would of been a better title for much of the last seven episodes. The one shining light in the dark? The unlikely but captivating romance between Lexi (Maude Apatow) and Fezco (Angus Cloud) slowly but surely blossoming before our eyes. The stolen glances they exchanged at a house party, in the shop where he works, and more recently over a joint while watching Stand By Me on the sofa together, have sent Fexi well wishers into overdrive. If this weren't a show about the perils of drug addiction one might say, as the internet is wont to do, shoot it into our veins.
Lexi and Fez are a Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson kind of couple: an unlikely duo you find yourself captivated by despite misgivings about their suitability. The sense of wanting something good to happen to Lexi feels even more pronounced after this week’s episode, where her play highlighted her outsider status, touching on the childhood trauma of her father’s addiction issues and her adolescence spent in the shadow of her beautiful sister, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney).
The play was Lexi’s imagination coming to life, but the real fantasy was the idea of Fez filling the prime seat she had saved him in the audience. The ‘to be continued’ cliff-hanger which came at the end of the episode leaves us in Fexi limbo, as while it’s clear the heavies have come knocking for Fez as revenge for killing Mouse, whether he makes it out alive remains to be seen.
