3) Before starting the next school semester, I wanted to take a break and revisit a classic game. I played through Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance. This game was released in the late 90s back when space sims were popular and when LucasArts was actually making good games. (Space sims have only recently encountered a resurgence with a couple of noteworthy titles.) Before there was Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous, there were games like these.

I wouldn't say this game really was groundbreaking, but it was entertaining nonetheless. The player takes on the role of the protagonist Ace Azzameen, an aspiring pilot who joins the Rebellion against the Empire.

In the game, the player flies missions for the Azzameen family against their rivals the Viraxo and later for the rebellion. The game is somewhat challenging, so, being an average gamer, I played through this on "Medium" difficulty. I'll have to confess, this is the first time I beat the game without using the invulnerability option.

I also installed a visual upgrade for this game known as the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade. You can find the files to download here:

Another issue that came up when playing through this is that this game has an issue with modern multi-core CPUs. I recommend following the instructions in this thread to avoid any audio sync issues with the cutscenes:

The game is capped at about 32FPS, so I recorded everything at 29.97FPS (didn't make sense to record at 60).

All parts of this are property of LucasArts, Totally Games, and/or the XWA Upgrade team. I'm merely featuring this on my page to show people how to beat the game.

Enjoy!
