Sunday Longplay - Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled - Adventure Mode 101%
27This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm playing a newly-released remake of a game I've wanted to play on my channel for a while. Welcome to Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled!
Back in the 5th generation of consoles with the Playstation 1 vs. the Nintendo 64, there were three main contenders in the kart racing genre: Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing on the N64, and Crash Team Racing on the PS1. I was a Nintendo kid growing up, but I did get a chance to play CTR on a PS1 at my local health club. And I honestly liked it better than either MK64 or DKR. Between the track designs and all the different ways to race on them, CTR wins in every category in my book. So when I first heard a remake was coming, I had to jump on it.
For this episode, I will cover the main Adventure Mode. The story of this mode goes like this. An alien from the planet Gasmoxia named Nitros Oxide invades Earth, noticing its citizens' love of racing. To test his skills, he challenges Earth to a game called "Survival of the Fastest" where he challenges Earth's best driver to a race for the planet. If Earth's driver wins, Oxide will leave the planet alone. But if Oxide wins, he'll turn the planet into a concrete parking lot and making the Earthlings his minions.
In order to race Oxide, you need 4 boss keys to unlock his garage. In each area of the world, there are four races. Win 1st place in each one to get a trophy. Win all 4 trophies in the area, and the area boss will challenge you to a 1-on-1 race. Beat him and you get a key to unlock the next area. Repeat this process in the next 3 areas, and then you can race Oxide.
But wait! After beating Oxide, he moves the goalpost challenging you to gather all of his time relics and race him again in order to truly be the fastest. This is where 100% completion comes into play. After beating the boss of each area, two more challenges open up for each track: the CTR Challenge and the Relic Race. In the CTR Challenge, you have to find the letters C, T, and R hidden throughout each track and win the race to get a CTR Token. In the Relic Race, you have to race a time trial while hitting wooden time crates to stop time for the number of seconds indicated on each box. Beating 3 different time thresholds will award you one of 3 different types of relics: Sapphire (lowest), Gold (medium), and Platinum (highest). You only need Sapphire relics for 100% completion, but if you get all Golds or Platinums, you can get 101% completion. I won't stress myself trying to get all Platinums right now since I'm still kind of re-learning the game, but I may try it later on. I did still want to get at least all Golds in the meantime, though.
Even outside of Adventure Mode, there is still much to do. In the local arcade modes, you can do Cup Races, regular Time Trials (with two challenge ghosts against N. Tropy and N. Oxide to test you and N. Tropy unlockable by beating all his times), Relic Races, and CTR Challenges for not just Crash Team Racing, but also its sequel Crash Nitro Kart! I never played CNK, so this means a whole new set of tracks for me to explore! I plan to do that later on as well.
