Super Arcade Football
0As someone who still plays SWOS (Sensible World of Soccer) today i gotta say this is a very enjoyable one-button footie game - with limitations.
First, i absolutely adore the graphics. As i understand it from an extensive 2 minute research this game used to have different graphics (3d models i assume?) and switched to sprites. Personally, i love the style - Not too "chibi" and a lot of attention to detail. The entire atmosphere is great.
The controls are good too. I still haven't figured out how to lob a ball, but everything feels fine. It's not SWOS, but the controls feel consistent in their own right.
It is quite unfortunate then that this arcade footie game seems to follow the same route that so many have - Making it a "non serious", more casual-leaning game. Don't get me wrong, the story mode is enjoyably cheesy (And unlike other arcade footie games i tried it atleast has more than "friendly" and "dyi tournament" on offer) but i feel like it's missing potential by not having a career mode.
"SWOS" career mode is the baseline for me there, and in the past two decades i don't recall a single arcade footie game that built upon that mode. It's all barebones player-matches or gimmicky stuff. And sadly this game is no different there.
What happened? Did i miss the meeting where game devs decided arcade footie games should allways have the depth of a puddle? Or does nobody who can code a very simple manager game work on these projects?
But personal grievances with arcade footie games aside, this is a good 2d footie engine - I just wish it would be used for something more indepth.
