Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy.
It is the sequel to Super Mario Land, and was released in Japan and North America in 1992, and in Europe the following year.
In Super Mario Land 2, the player assumes the role of the protagonist Mario, whose main objective is to reclaim his personal island, Mario Land, from the clutches of his greedy evil counterpart Wario.
Development for Super Mario Land 2 began in November 1991, lasting about a year and ending in September 1992.
According to an interview included within the game's official strategy guide, the development team wanted the game not to feel "bound by the conventions of the previous games", striving to make it feel unique compared to previous Super Mario games while also dealing with the limitations of putting such a game on a portable system.
Super Mario Land 2 received critical acclaim upon release and sold about 11 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the most successful and highest-rated titles on the Game Boy.
Reviewers emphasized that the game surpassed its predecessor in all aspects.
Super Mario Land 2 also historically marks the debut appearance of Wario, initially playing a role as the main villain of this game who would eventually evolve over the years into the more Selfish, Fat and Greedy coin-loving counterpart to Super Mario himself.
The name "Wario" is a play on "Mario" and "Warui", the Japanese phrase literally meaning "bad".
The team also realized that the letter "W" was coincidentally similar to the letter "M" turned upside-down, and chose to stylize the character as such, giving him a hat similar to Mario's but with a "W" emblem rather than an "M".
Wario would soon prove popular, and become a prominent character in the Super Mario series as well as an Anti-Hero starring in several of his own games, the first being this game's sequel Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

In his greatest Game Boy adventure, Mario faces off against his evil rival Wario, who has captured Mario Land and turned it into his private playground.
To force Wario off his ill-gotten throne, Mario must search all-new worlds for the six golden coins that unlock the gate to Mario's castle. A mob of monsters, old and new, seek to stop him.
