My goal was to make a revamp for the set numer 8916 - Takadox. However, instead of focusing solely on perfecting the original, I wanted my design to reflect what he might have looked like before he mutated.
We know that Takadox came from one of the six races brought into life by Mata Nui to rule the Matoran Universe. Representatives of such a race must have looked proud. However, when we look at what Takadox looks like after the mutation, we see a hunched over monster, inspiring more fear than respect or trust that should be felt from the leader.
However, I asked myself: does the hump have to be disfiguring? Can’t a figure have a humpbacked silhouette and look proud at the same time? So I redesigned the torso design to make it look more elegant and decorate the whole structure.
The mutations are associated with interfering with the biological part of a creature's nature, so to distinguish my Takadox from the original, I decided to make my MOC's limbs look more robotic while keeping the simple build reminiscent of canister sets as I didn't want my Takadox to become a titan.
We know that Takadox had normal hands, but as a result of mutations, these fused with the blades he found. When we look at the official set, we can see that the blades point downwards, and since he caught them that way before mutating, he probably preferred this way of fighting. Therefore, I gave him two twin daggers as a weapon.
I opted for less demonic-looking feet and thickened the muscles of his arms and decorated them with shoulder straps in a light blue color. In order not to deviate too much from the original concept of Takadox, I did not deprive him of spikes, but instead of scary looking red ones, I gave him white that blends smoothly into the overall structure. I have also kept the abdomen movable so that my Takadox can sit down and his weight is balanced, which improves his stability.
The biggest challenge was the head. According to the canon, the Takadox race was allowed to wear Kanohii masks, although they did not wear them all the time. So I had to finish the construction with a head that would be compatible with the masks, and the scale of the construction did not allow me to have a custom head. Therefore, in the end, I opted for the well-known Toa Metru head, which unfortunately was never produced in blue, which would be a much better solution than a gray element that fits together just because I used many other gray elements when designing the torso.
The recording does not fully reflect it, but the final result is a MOC rich in detail and surprisingly coherent in color, which in terms of the number of parts could easily be released as a canister set with a complexity level similar to the Toa of 2016s.
