What do you get when you take double dragon, mix a little bit of skate or die.. and a touch of 1990s radiculness?
You get Rollergames for the NES.
Prior to getting this game in my collection, I had not heard anything about it. So upon playing it for the first time, I didnt know what to expect.
What I got was a somewhat pleasing, yet challenging game that brought something different from the people at Ultra games who brought games such as Nightshade, TMNT and Skate or Die among others.
This game screams 90s.
RollerGames is a one-player game that takes place in a futuristic dystopian universe where there are six teams of rollerblade racers, three good and three evil, that are in violent competition as the good team seeks to rescue the head of the RollerGames, who has been kidnapped by the evil teams.
You begin the game by choosing one of three Rollerskaters, each representing a specific team. From Thunder-Birds, we have Ice Box, the big guy. Then there's the chick, Rolling Thunder from Hot Flash, who has long and sexy pink hair. And finally, representing the Rockers is Californian Kid,
Rollergames is a pretty solid action game. The game starts off pretty well. You begin flying through the streets on your rollerblades punching your way through swarms of enemies. the challenge is to navigate the street course while dodging deadly obstacles and beating up all enemys encountered.
The graphics were pretty good for it's time and music is typical nes action flavor, which is not bad. The fighting engine is quite good and the controls are responsive. It's a very challenging, although most of the challenge doesn't really comes from the enemies, but rather than timing your jumps right. Although controls are extremely easy to master, you'll find yourself getting stuck on jumps due to the screens awkwardness
The fighting scheme feels like it was directly taken from double dragon, The A button jumps, the B button attacks, mid-air attacks are included, pressing A and B together launches a special attack allowed three times per area, and the directional pad provides movement.
This game provides a great challenge, but like Double Dragon it tries to combine platforming with a beat em up and it doesn't mix very well.
Trying to make your way fast to the end of a level can be very hard, especially due to the number of pitfalls that are in the regular stages. This game is full of death traps, and also suffers from trial and error; you must learn the courses if you want to master them. The real problem about this is that if you died, you must begin the level all over again.
Thankfully, there is unlimited continues in this game.
