Slayer - Raining Blood - I think about music a lot, especially because I grew up playing it. While other kids were going to football games or playing Mario, I was in a band, playing parties, listening to music, writing songs and practicing (it was never called rehearsal.) This song and the album it came from were both always on the playlist.

If you look at Rock n Roll, if you grew up on it and have always looked at it for something you couldn't find anywhere else, then you know that it hasn't really enjoyed the same popularity it once did. Yes, there are now popular bands that play rock n' roll (they call it) but it's NOT rock n' roll. We know this. It's hard to explain, but we know this. I actually enjoy a lot of pop music, and even some old disco and country, but it's not the same thing.

But, most of my favorite songs are really rock n' roll, at least in spirit. The spirit of rock n' roll is the most important aspect of rock n' roll! This riff, just one of the several great ones in Raining Blood by Slayer, easily represents the best parts of rock n' roll.

Sure, you have to be in the mood to listen to Slayer. And, to be frank, I don't listen to metal (we used to call it ALL metal) as much as I did when I was a kid. (Heck, I don't listen to RUSH or Johnny Cash as much either!) But when you really listen to this song -- and this riff -- you realize it is a perfect song. It might not be as attractive as some people would like it to be, but it's the perfect rock song.

It's aggressive, fun, easy to follow, almost funky even. And, it ROCKS.
