The Forgotten Resident Evil Game That's Too Bizarre to Ignore...
147I hope you guys aren’t getting sick of these videos covering the weirder and more obscure Resident Evil spinoffs, because today we’re taking a look at one of the weirdest and most obscure of the bunch. After the release of another survival horror title, Dino Crisis, a game which I really need to cover on the channel someday, Capcom was looking to develop a port of the game for the Game Boy Color. They ended up commissioning a small British studio, M4, to make it happen. Once M4 had produced a demo of the game for them, Capcom was beyond impressed with their work, and asked M4 to instead create a completely original Resident Evil title using the same engine. This new game would come to be known as Resident Evil Gaiden, with Gaiden being a Japanese word that roughly translates to side story. Now an RE game for the Game Boy might not sound like the most exciting concept, but what if I told you that the game’s story was originally intended to be canon to the broader Resident Evil universe, and was even written by Hiroki Kato, the director of Resident Evil - Code: Veronica. But because of certain things that occur in Gaiden’s story, it is completely impossible for it to still be canon to the overall storyline. Do I have your attention now? Resident Evil Gaiden is a 2001 action-adventure game developed by M4 for the Game Boy Color. It was published by Capcom in Japan and North America, and by Virgin Interactive in Europe. Receiving generally mixed reviews by critics, the game marks a departure from other entries in the series, insofar as areas are explored with the playable character seen from a top-down perspective and with battles fought in first-person view. The story revolves around a viral outbreak on a passenger ship and has Leon S. Kennedy and Barry Burton return as protagonists. This game is non-canon, as its plot is contradicted by the main series in key parts, and its events are ignored.
