This is actually the Dreamcast version of The King of Fighters '98, or "The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest", but with minimal improvements and some tweaking (for better or worse). Even despite that, it's quite alright because the game is still a superb 2D fighting game with a smidge of depth and the ability to make tons of different teams and it sports one of the largest character rosters of any KoF game with EX and Orochi characters. The characters haven't grown much ability-wise, but this is one of the most "balanced" 2D fighters I've ever played, and that's saying something. That doesn't mean it's my favorite, but I've had some good times with this game.

I've heard things about the sound and visuals of the game, but the game still looks and sounds respectable compared to other 2D fighters on the Dreamcast, so it's all good to me. The gameplay has a lot of flexibility (right down to charging super moves or building stock), and the fighting is fairly standard KoF fare (very simple compared to '99 and up). About the only thing I don't like in this version of the game is the controls. They are not bad, but I can be extremely fast and precise at inputting commands. Some combos are so hard to pull off not due to their complexity but due to a lag in the controls that you'd swear they weren't even possible. Anyway, it's a cool game. Oddly enough, I believe this was one of the first Dreamcast games I ever owned. A friend gave it to me.

Notes: The opening plus three random fights and a video end segment with editing to show some of the environments. There was an odd glitch during the first round of Kim's fight during the 52nd second (due to my Dreamcast skipping), which is why there is a quick transition there. I'd have beaten Yuri over again, but I made this video a week ago and already cleared my other project files, which means I'd have to do the whole video over just to add an extra second. Yeah, it's not worth the hassle.
