PART 1

The Massacre of Mankind is an engaging but somewhat sloppy novel. Written by lauded British hard sci-fi author Stephen Baxter, this officially recognized sequel to H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds has a compelling protagonist, some enthralling sequences and grim atmosphere, but the characters are generally quite flat, the narrative drags and has an inconsistent point of view, and the prose has some annoying recurring phrases.

Stay tuned for part two of this review, in which I discuss casting choices and the role of imagination in reading.
