Some appreciation showcase time: Mazinger Zero. Next to SKL, Zero is another obscure spin off series story I didn’t really grow up with or learned about over the many years. However, now that do know about it, I learned to like the idea and concept. Albeit not a perfect one. Although it has its flaws, I still like the general concept for this version of the iconic and arguably the best Mecha in Japanese history. For those who don’t know, I’ll give y’all a brief rundown of the basic premise of this version of Mazinger Z: Mazinger Zero is the result of when the Mecha unleashes all 7 secret black boxes that act as different capabilities built within the core of the suit. While the previous 6 boxes unlock very powerful capabilities for the Mecha, the 7th box is the one that changes his physical appearance into the monstrous shin Mazinger or Mazinger Zero. On top of all the overpowered capabilities and super powers that Mecha obtains, Mazinger Zero becomes sentient and can think for itself and adapt like a human would. Unfortunately for the pilot who unlocks this, Koji gets completely infused into Mazinger’s controls that it messes with his psychological mental state merging with the robot’s very mind. This ultimately corrupts Koji turning both into living nightmares capable of utter chaos and complete annihilation. In terms of Mazinger Zero’s power scaling, he’s a multiversal threat. Yeah he’s THAT OP. Of course this short manga story is non canon but it is very interesting nonetheless. Think of Mazinger Zero as the dark “what if” counterpart of the iconic and beloved hero of Koji and his trusty Mecha Mazinger Z, similar to Dark Link, Evil Ryu, Nemesis Prime and the likes.
