MMORPGs have been around for over two decades now, and they have gone through several phases of evolution. From the early text-based MUDs to the current generation of visually stunning games, the genre has come a long way. Some may argue that current day MMOs have taken a wrong turn somewhere down the path forward, and I would certainly agree with that, but I don't think there is any denying that MMORPGs are still the most exciting genre in video-gaming due to the massive aspect of other players and interaction. Even the simplistic features of MMORPGs hold great appeal such as being able to show off your gear to those around you instead of in a vacuum like you are in a single player or even a smaller-scale multiplayer environment.
But what does the future hold for MMORPGs? Will they continue to evolve or become a thing of the past? Let's find out.
First and foremost, it's essential to understand that MMORPGs are still incredibly popular among gamers. While some have declared the genre dead, others believe that there's still a lot of potential left in it. I believe there is still a great deal of magic left in the bottle and I believe that the advancement of technology is going to unlock the true potential of MMOs.
The future of MMORPGs lies in their ability to offer a unique experience to players. Developers are continually striving to create immersive worlds with exciting gameplay mechanics that keep players coming back for more. Games outside of the MMORPG umbrella are definitely going to help shape what MMOs become in the future, with massive successes such as MineCraft showing huge communities building and crafting worlds together is a great example of how to create an ecosystem and environment where the players can make their own content and never get bored and always come back for more.
And that brings us to one of the most significant developments in the genre is the emergence of sandbox MMORPGs. These games offer players complete freedom to explore the world, create their stories, and shape the environment. As technology continues to advance, we can expect these sandbox MMORPGs to become even more immersive and expansive, with more and more options for players to have control and to shape and balance the world around them. Developers have been itching to really dive into the possibilities of this with titles like EverQuest Next, even if it didn't make it to release, is a great example of trying to create a world that can be fully shaped by it's players. We are right on the edge of technology that would allow sandbox MMOs to truely take us to the next level, and I believe the final piece to this puzzle lies in Artificial Intelligence, because this is the technology that is making major progress that is going to aid developers in making sandbox features more amazing than we can even imagine. But we'll get to Artifical Intelligence in just a moment.
Another trend that we can expect to see more of is cross-platform play. With games becoming more accessible across different devices, players can enjoy a seamless experience across all platforms. This cross-platform compatibility will make MMORPGs even more accessible, allowing players to enjoy their favorite games no matter what system they are logging into the world with. If there is anything technology has taught us over the years, is it's ability to shrink the world, and MMORPGs will continue to be affected with this. There are already games like Final Fantasy 14 which offers players the ability to play on Playstation consoles on the same server with PC players, and their creative control design has made it hard for players to even know the difference with skilled players. We will definitely continue to see the MMO Genre evolve forward with more console and PC cross-play. Now, what role will Mobile play in all of this, I'll be honest, I don't even want to go there.
