The Order: 1886 is a game which promised a rich narrative told through a cinematic presentation of cut scenes merging seamlessly with third person shooting gameplay. It released to widespread criticism, with many claiming the imitation of Hollywood blockbusters as an archaic concept residing in antiquated perceptions of video games lacking their own artistic merit. However, I'm of the opinion everything and anything can be a game. Does it have interactive elements? Then it’s a video game and should be respected as such. From so called “walking simulators” like Proteus and Dear Esther, to raw “game games” like Civilization or Fallout, they're all intending to create engaging experiences through the actions of a player. Through the creation of engaging experiences, we can create powerful meaning. For what in the world is more powerful than taking an action? Certainly, it’s not watching passively into a window. Therefore, I prefer to judge games on whether or not they create an emotional response within me through the actions the game would wish me to perform. Are these interactions engaging? Is The Order 1886 engaging?
