The run to level 100 | Torchlight II
Here is my longplay of the final levels on outlander to reach the level cap of 100. I'm really glad I played Torchlight II here in 2022. It wasn't initially on my list of games I was going to do from 2012. When I saw that it was in fact released in 2012, and remembering how much I liked the original it had to be added. If I remember correctly I didn't buy this back then because of that transition from UW to work and feeling like I was too broke to buy it. It was probably like 20-30 dollars when it came out, so I must've been feeling especially broke!!
During my 100 hours playing this game I strangely thought a lot about Dota 2, a game that I would start playing in early 2013 and continue to do so for the following 2 years. Also during that time I spent some of my gaming time playing the free-to-play version of World of Warcraft. I view these three games as having very similar DNA, albeit occupying different genres.
As I thought about those days playing Dota 2 and F2P WoW the thing that struck me the most is although I have no regrets in the time playing them, I don't remember having all that much fun playing. There was like this low frequency hum of anxiety resonating with me in these games that left me numb and lacking much joy in playing. This is true especially of Dota 2.
I respect Dota 2 for what it is, but even then something in the corner of my mind was telling me I was not where I needed to be with this hobby. I think being locked-in to a game for up to an hour at a time with no chance to even take your eyes off the screen best describes what my brain was trying to get me to move on from. In retrospect I probably should have played Torchlight II for 300 hours in those days instead of Dota 2.
Turning back to Torchlight II, I made a commitment that 100 hours is what I was going to give to this game. I have other games I want to play, and frankly other interests that I want to give my time to. I know myself, and in a previous life a game like Torchlight II would have become an all-day-everyday kind of game. Phantasy Star Online and World of Warcraft being the two greatest examples of that from that previous life. :-)
It's not never again for Torchlight II. I'll check in with you sometime down the road. There's also the third game out there I'll probably do at some point. Until that day I'll let Steam cloud save hang onto my character. ggwp :-)
