The Nintendo Switch is now four years old! Launched back on March 3 2017, it
was a big leap from the massively underperforming Wii U. What a sight
for sore eyes the Switch was - Nintendo had done it again and were
propelled right back into the mix, once again carving out their own
niche in the space.

Within the Switch's first year, Nintendo released some heavy hitters.
Breath of the Wild was a launch title for the system and boy did it
sell. The press that this game garnered definitely helped hype
everyone up. But breath of the wild wasn't the only Nintendo title
that we saw released during the Switch's first year - Nintendo came
out swinging with first party exclusives and dropped Mario Kart 8
Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Through the four years that the Switch has been on the market, it has
exceeded many expectations. The handheld console hybrid has now sold
more units than the 3DS which is a feat in itself. Smash Ultimate,
Pokemon Sword and Shield, Animal Crossing, and a whole lineup of other
party titles have helped catapult Switch sales and send it soaring
through the ranks. While there have been some dry spells, overall
Nintendo has come through with fresh content and new games to keep
players hyped.

The Switch is on pace to outsell the Wii which is sitting pretty at
just over 100 million units sold. Innovation has paid off well for the
Nintendo Switch and many fans are now wondering what's next for this
handheld hybrid. 2020 was one of the Switch's biggest blowout years
yet. The pandemic helped skyrocket sales after Animal Crossing New
Horizons released on the system. It was nearly impossible to find a
Switch in stock, and many were left clamoring for them online, hoping
to be able to order one. New Horizons went on to sell over 31 million
copies and is the second best selling games on the Switch, right
behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

While many will rag on the Wii U because of its poor sales numbers, it
was home to an array of great first party titles. Because not many
players purchased the Wii U, many of these games remained overlooked
and because of this, Nintendo saw an opportunity with the Switch. They
began porting and releasing revamped Switch version of some of their
first party Wii U game releases like Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country
Tropical Freeze, and recently Super Mario 3d World with Bowsers Fury.
Word on the street is that Nintendo is planning on bringing The Legend
of Zelda Windwaker and Twilight Princess to the Switch later this year
for the Zelda 35th anniversary.

With the Switch, Nintendo has even begun dabbling in online services -
somethign that they have been hesitant to do over the years. While
many complain that Nintendo still is slacking in the online
department, it is nice to see them making an effort and becoming more
open to the idea of bringing online play to their first party titles.
The NES and SNES online library is a cool addition and hopefully we
see Nintendo add additional systems and games in the future.

So grab your Nintendo Switch and some of your favorite games and
celebrate the 4 year anniversary in the way that it was meant to be.
Happy playing!
