In the early hours of July 23, 1982, a horrific accident occurred on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie, resulting in the tragic deaths of actor Vic Morrow and two child actors, Myca Dinh Le (7) and Renee Shin-Yi Chen (6). The accident took place during the filming of a scene directed by John Landis for the movie's first segment, which was loosely based on an episode of the original Twilight Zone TV show.
The scene involved Morrow’s character, a Vietnam War veteran, attempting to rescue two children from a war-torn village while being pursued by a helicopter. As special effects explosions erupted on set, the helicopter was flying dangerously low. One of the pyrotechnics exploded too close to the helicopter, causing its rotor blades to fail. The helicopter spun out of control and crashed onto Morrow and the two children, killing all three instantly.
The tragedy sent shockwaves through Hollywood, sparking investigations into the safety practices on film sets and child labor laws. Director John Landis, along with several other crew members, was charged with involuntary manslaughter. After a high-profile trial that lasted nearly a decade, they were acquitted of the charges in 1987, though the incident raised serious ethical questions about the pressures of filmmaking and the responsibilities of directors and producers to ensure cast and crew safety.
