The Tekken series underwent serious evolution with its most recent edition; TEKKEN 7. Evolution and adaptation is nothing new for the series: Tekken 3 truly brought the fighting game genre into the third dimension with its addition of the dedicated sidestep. Tekken 4 added stage interactivity via walls. Tekken 6 added the heart-attack-inducing rage mechanic. But arguably no Tekken game expanded the options available to the players than Tekken 7. Rage Arts, Rage Drives and Power Crushes all added new means of skill expression to the already incredible depth provided by Tekken’s unique system.
The depths of Tekken’s movesets, with some characters featuring upwards of 100 techniques, allows for incredibly diverse playstyles. It’s been a hallmark of the series — You don’t need to know the entire movelist to succeed with a character; many players take a set of moves that suit them and build their playstyle around them. The result is a nearly endless collection of possible approaches, not just across Tekken 7’s 51-character roster, but among players of the same character as well.
That hasn’t stopped some players from developing a rigid idea of how Tekken is supposed to be played, though. For many who think this way, that idea was developed in the earlier games of the Tekken series, games that lacked some of the mechanics that make Tekken 7 the game it is now.
