Do you have a healthy rabbit, chicken, or guinea pig that you no longer want? A zoo in Denmark is offering to take it in and feed it to its predators.
Aalborg Zoo accepts donations of live animals—even horses—to feed lions, tigers, or lynx. The small animals are then euthanized "gently" by trained staff.
According to the zoo, these animals are part of the carnivores' natural diet, bones, hair, and all. They say they want to replicate the food chain, just like in nature.
On its website, beneath a photo of a tiger devouring a piece of meat, Aalborg Zoo details the requirements for donating a horse. To be eligible, horses must have an equine passport and not have been treated for any illness in the last 30 days. And as a bonus, you could get a tax deduction. It's a fairly common practice in Denmark. The zoo says it has been doing this for years, and some visitors find it enjoyable to be able to contribute to the meals of the zoo's predators. Of course, this process raises a debate: is it an environmentally friendly way to feed the animals or just a disturbing and immoral practice?
