So someone at TAD Corp. thought of the genius idea of giving Taito the task of developing a port of Toki (JuJu Densetsu in Japan) for the NES, and boy what did we get.
I personally think this is a really good port and game for the NES library, but it seems that not even Taito was content on making a straight port of the Arcade title, just like the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version, and I am all in for ports that differ from the original, it's more fun this way.
The main change here is the addition of hearts and items after defeating a boss, so unlike the arcade game you can survive more than 1 hit, and you gain your hearts back at the end of a level (assuming you were hit at least once), and increase your max HP at the end of every 2 levels. Just don't make the mistake of taking an heart restore then an extra heart, you'll be wasting the former.
The most insane change here is the invincibility helmet, in the original game it only protected to front part of Toki, but here you get fully invincible for what feels like 20 seconds or more, and anything that comes at you will either die in 1 hit or die quickly which is absolutely nuts, I love it, and it's a good speedrunning tool.
Also, in classic Taito style, this game has a decent chunk of luck based moments put into it, ranging from enemy behavior to spawn locations to items to attacks, so it's both an extra grain of pain and a bit more fun too.
