7Really wanted to make this video at some point. Ah, rivalry. Rivals. Quite a common thing both in real life and especially in fiction, and even more especially in video games. I’m sure you know what a rival is. Everyone has a rival (I’m sure you may have one or had one, the person reading this) and a rival is quite different from something like an enemy. Many video games have made great rivals, and perhaps some have learnt how to make an fantastic rival character. In gaming there are heroes, and then their rivals. Rivals are important characters. The heroes might be at the top, but then they have one opponent who is able to…well…rival them. Someone their size. Someone worthy to face them. Someone their level. Someone equal. Someone just as cool, or strong, or smart, or skilled or whatever. Sometimes even better than them and sometimes whilst great, not quite as cool. But either way many rival characters in gaming are absolutely awesome and we love them! Rivals are very much alike the heroes. Power, personality, looks or whatever. And that’s what makes them so amazing, cool, interesting and compelling. Another thing is that a rival doesn’t even need to be evil. They could be good guys or antiheroes or whatever, they could even possibly be a better person than the hero themselves, it’s just that they are their opponent/rival that acts as an obstacle. Only about 2 characters in this video are actually evil really. The rest are not really or not at all even. A rival doesn’t have to be a villain, but they still go against the hero. They could even be their friend/ally at the same time or just a friendly rival. Anyway, my point is we all love these kinds of characters. They’re awesome! Sometimes we love them even more, and games really know how to make a great rival character. Rivalries are always epic and some are iconic.
