As with Juno, I was unimpressed with this 2007 black comedy from director Alan Ball. The freedom of choice this film endorses is cheapened by a dull heroine and a very simplistic portrayal of teenage life. I have to ask: why does this film concentrate so directly on sex, at the expense of the other themes? The film is confronting, well-acted and oppressive, sure, but I also found it singleminded. Moreover, scenes of abuse should NEVER be presented as erotic.

Cheers! .
